LOGAN — Despite the recent wet weather, long-time drought conditions persist in Utah and the Great Salt Lake is still at the center of concern.

Next Wednesday, the Cache Valley Chapter of the Utah League of Women Voters is bringing an education forum to Logan to discuss how to possibly fix that.

On KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday, Kendra Penry from the local chapter, said Cache Valley has a part to play.

“Because we are so far from Salt Lake, we often feel a bit disconnected from it. But we are part of the Bear River Watershed which provides a lot of the water to Salt Lake. So, the choices we make here have a really outsized impact on what happens at the lake. And we have choices to make if we are serious about saving it we need to make those choices now, we don’t have a whole lot of time left if we really want it to survive,” she explained.

This is why public policy needs to be fully on board. Penry said while we are thankful for the recent snows, it is not enough.

“One year of snow does not make up for so many years of drought. We’ve got to start making some tough choices because if we lose the lake, it affects us environmentally, it affects our health, economically. It pretty much affects everything about Utah, even those of us that can’t see the lake everyday.”

Jaimi Butler, founding coordinator of the Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College, children’s book author, and co-editor of a book on the biology of the Great Salt Lake will present ‘We are in a Great (Salt Lake) Pickle’ on Wednesday, March 1st at 6:30 p.m. in the basement meeting room at the First Presbyterian Church of Logan.

Penry said the educational meeting is a chance to come and learn, to find out how we can ensure that there is enough water locally and also that the Great Salt Lake has enough water to function as it has.
