LOGAN – The Cache Valley Center for the Arts will welcome Jazz at Lincoln Center as the next attraction in its 2022-23 National Touring season.

That performance is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 in the Ellen Eccles Theatre in downtown Logan.

The Logan appearance of the Lincoln Center jazz artists and musicians is part of a groundbreaking 47-city national tour running from Jan. 20 to April 3.

They will perform “Songs We Love,” revisiting some of the great jazz tunes from the Roaring Twenties to the early 1950s.

“Songs We Love” was first presented as the 2016 season opener of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, according to music director and trumpeter Riley Mulherkar.

Since then, the program has been made available to venues in other cities, but only in short outings. With its expanded 2023 tour, however, Jazz at Lincoln Center is providing concert halls in cities large and small an opportunity to offer excellent jazz music to a broader range of audiences nationwide.

Here in Logan, Mulherkar with lead an instrumental sextet including lead trombonist Mariel Bildsten, saxophonist Lucas Pino, pianist Mathis Picard, Barry Stephenson on bass and Taurien “TJ” Reddick on drums.

The vocalists from Jazz at Lincoln Center are Vuyo Sotashe, Brianna Thomas and Shenel Johns. That ensemble will bring to life songs and styles that define the sound of jazz, Mulherkar explains.

“It’s a journey of blues, swing and surprise,” he adds, “from the sounds of Ma Rainey and the extraordinary storytelling of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to the easy swing of Frank Sinatra and the dramatic flair of Judy Garland.”

“Song We Love” will also feature the works of renowned composers like George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Harold Arlen.

For more than three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a global advocate for jazz, culture and arts education. The program was developed under the guidance of manager and artistic director Wynton Marsalis.

During its stop in Logan, the New York artists and musicians will also perform “Let Freedom Swing,” a free concert show for Cache Valley students. Since 2013, “Let Freedom Swing” has been performed for nearly half a million students in more than 3,000 concerts nationwide.
