LOGAN —  The current session of the Utah legislature is one-third of the way through. On KVNU’s For the People County Hour on Wednesday, Cache County Executive David Zook said officials at the county are tracking the bills and all that’s going on.

“And then on top of the local elected officials within the county watching things, we have department heads who are keeping an eye on things, and some staff in some of the departments. Then we have a statewide association called the Utah Association of Counties and we’re members of that association, and the number one thing they do for us is help us with legislation,” he said.

Zook repeated a phrase that “if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu,” explaining that it’s important to be engaged in the process and advocate for the things you want.

“Thankfully we have great legislators, and I’ve heard people say over the years, another saying I hear a lot when people talk about this is ‘if you have good legislators you don’t need a lobbyist.’ Well maybe, but I think it’s good to have more help. Many hands make light work.”

He said although the session is just 45 days long, local representatives work year-round.

“This is something I think that is maybe a little misunderstood about our legislature and those we elect to represent us there. Yeah, we have a part-time legislature, they have a 45-day session. But those men and women work hard all year-round; they are constantly at meetings. I see them everywhere. We have meetings in our community and they’re there.”

Zook said they are there during the year, connecting with their constituents, they are researching, and the legislative session is really the culmination of sometimes multiple years of work.
