Lewiston man dies in house fire Sunday morning

LOGAN — Authorities have confirmed the death of an 89-year-old man who died in a house fire Sunday morning. The fire was reported at a home near 150 South 200 West in Lewiston, around 8:45 a.m.

Witnesses called 911 reporting that the house was fully engulfed with smoke, and flames were coming from the roof and windows. They also stated the home’s resident might be inside.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Doyle Peck said fire crews from Lewiston and Smithfield responded to the area and began fighting the blaze while deputies provided traffic control. While the fire was being brought under control, first responders were informed that the resident had not been seen exiting the residence and was not accounted for. He had last been seen by family members in the residence the night before.

After fighting the fire for some time, firefighters were able to enter the structure and confirmed that an individual was inside and was deceased. Investigators responded from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshall’s office and were able to identify the victim as Joe C. Nunez.

Peck said said Nunez’s death is tragic. Although the investigation is ongoing, it is believed that the fire was accidental.

No other injuries were reported.

Members from the Cache County Victim’s Advocates also responded to provide assistance to the family.

Peck said, “The Cache County Sheriff’s Office and Victim’s Advocates extend their sincerest condolences to Nunez’s family. This is a tragic incident and comes especially hard at this time of year.
