LOGAN — As part of routine end-of-year chores, Ernesto López was appointed chairman of the Logan Municipal Council for 2023 on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
López will succeed council member Jeanne Simmonds, who served as chair of the city council in 2022, effective Jan. 1.
López was nominated by council member Amy Z. Anderson and that motion was seconded by council member Tom Jensen. The nomination was then unanimously endorsed by other council members.
López joined the Logan Municipal Council in October 2020, after being selected to serve out the unexpired term of former councilmember Jess Bradfield. He was subsequently re-elected to the at-large position in November of 2021.
A native of Tijuana, López has been a resident of Logan for more than 20 years.
He is an instructional course designer for the Extension Service at Utah State University.
His previous professional experience includes serving as a distance learning manager and technical trainer for Harris Research, managing the Logan Multicultural Center and serving low-income families at Bear River Head Start.
On a volunteer basis, López is chairman of the Logan City Library Latino Advisory Council, which organizes the annual Hispanic Heritage Festival in Logan.
He is also a member of the Educational Excellence for Latinos initiative at Logan High School, where López has been involved in organizing the school’s Latino Education Fair.
In other business on Tuesday, council member Amy Z. Anderson was unanimously appointed as the council’s vice chair for 2023.
Its Dec. 6 meeting was the final gathering of the municipal council for 2022. The council members had previously voted to cancel their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Cool, he seems to have the right stuff for a rep.
