Man arrested following high-speed chase and crash into Logan home

LOGAN — A 26-year-old Louisiana man was arrested Monday night after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle and then crashing into a Logan home. Jamal Malcom Vanburen was later booked into the Cache County Jail, where he is temporarily being held without bail.

According to a probable cause statement, Utah Highway Patrol troopers received information around 5 p.m. of a reported stolen vehicle from Brigham City that was driving recklessly through Sardine Canyon, US-89/91, toward Cache Valley. Dispatch received multiple 911 calls about the same northbound vehicle, driving at an extremely high rate of speed, and passing in the median and emergency lane.

Several troopers responded to the canyon and spotted a GMC Yukon traveling at 110 mph. They activated their lights and attempted to pull the vehicle over.

The driver failed to stop and sped up, passing cars recklessly and running several red lights. Cache County Sheriff’s deputies set up spike strips during the chase but the driver avoided them.

Law enforcement lost sight of the vehicle for a time until a Smithfield Police officer saw it driving through a grass field near 100 East 300 South in Logan. The vehicle was driving recklessly and crashed into a light pole, ending up on the front yard of a home near 50 East 300 South.

Troopers report, Vanburen attempted to run away on foot but was taken into custody near the crash site. He was making strange statements, seemed to be hallucinating, and thought that demons were out to get him and were going to kill him, the arrest affidavit detailed.

No other vehicles were involved or damaged.

Vanburen later consented to a drug test which revealed he was allegedly positive for methamphetamine and amphetamines.

According to jail records, Vanburen was booked on receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle, failing to stop at the command of police, speeding, reckless driving and other offenses. Formal charges are pending the completion of law enforcement’s investigation.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

I think I saw this vehicle driving northbound in the middle of the road on 1st East on my way home yesterday. The car was speeding and the meridian was pretty icy. Scary!

My son was in the car that the driver swerved to miss when he hit the pole. Absolutely terrifying. High speed chase leading into Logan? What the hell were they thinking?

It’s a miracle he didn’t injure or kill anybody on the rampage! I guess either, drugs, mental health crisis, or he’s just playing the fool. Either way, he endangered a lot of lives and needs to be held accountable.

Too bad he lives to tell about it. He’ll be back on the road in a few days.

You might want to reconsider your statement
