LETTER: Time for a change

To the editor:

We are so grateful to live in the greatest country in the world! Part of saying that is because of where we live, here in the valley of these wondrous mountains, and because of the people who are here with us. Each of us is a blessed part of this great country.

Another part of this greatness is our freedoms, much more than we can count, and for some of us much more than we will ever understand. One of these freedoms is the freedom of speech. Free speech is not a forum for insulting, slanderous thoughts and emotions. Just because we disagree does not mean we have to be disagreeable.

We’ve known and served with Dave Erickson for over 3 decades. His action, behavior, and life have impressed us so much that he has earned our support and trust. Service to his family, community, and county says more to us than one person’s negative thoughts, ideas, and words.

Another person that we honor and respect very much is Lynn Lemon. We have served with him and have known him for many years. He served nobly as the Cache County Executive for 20½ years. He is supporting Marc Ensign.

We do not know Mr. Zook nor Mr. Ensign. But we do know Lynn and Dave and would follow their counsel and wisdom because they are people we do know and respect their opinions. Thus, we will be writing in Marc Ensign as the Cache County Executive/Surveyor.

Paul and Evelyn Andrew
Smithfield

I agree; I, too am extremely grateful to have the privilege of living in this great country, and I am truly blessed that my family emigrated to America in the early 1980’s. Yes, our freedoms are under attack, especially our freedom of speech. Sadly, some people do express insults, and post other emotionally charged comments on forums, yet insults are protected speech. Just because people are offended by things others write does not make writing or speaking insults unlawful; it just shows the character of the individual who lashes out at others rather than rationally debating issues. People have a right, and a duty to question actions and narratives put out by the media, authorities, and the government. Our founding fathers knew governments that are not questioned nor held to account by the citizenry were more likely to become tyrants, something we are currently seeing take place. To speak out against the government is now becoming a crime. When I have felt offended by remarks made by another there is always a reason why. Rather than demand that others accommodate and substantiate our comfortable narratives that we have adopted, perhaps we can ask ourselves why we feel offended by words either written or spoken. Perhaps we can do a bit of soul-searching and question our own narratives and find out why we really think we believe in the things we seem to. We can either reinforce them by providing factual, experiential, and/or transmittible information which supports our original beliefs; or we can determine what is faulty in our belief system and discover what the actual truth is. To honestly evaluate and question our own belief system takes a great deal of courage. I hope more people become brave enough to embark on this life-altering endeavor.

Can we get a source for this claim?

You are absolutely correct. I am offended that Mike Lee is and was more concerned with himself than the people of Utah. I am proud and excited that I get to vote against Mike Lee. I will probably vote for Zook, but I am not sure yet. I am still not sure why I should vote against Zook.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew, yes, I value Lynn Lemon’s opinion as well. Thank you for your thoughtful letter to the editor. And I’d like to compliment “There Is Always A Reason Why You Are Offended”– I really value what you said in your comment. “People have a right, and a duty to question actions and narratives put out by the media, authorities, and the government. Our founding fathers knew governments that are not questioned nor held to account by the citizenry were more likely to become tyrants, something we are currently seeing take place.” I second that.

Your candidate will lose but your pettiness will live on forever with all your posts.
