LOGAN — The Utah State University Jon M. Huntsman School of Business-sponsored Utah Women in Leadership Project released a white paper report a few weeks back on women-owned businesses in the state.
On KVNU’s For the People program earlier this month, the state director of the Women’s Business Center of Utah, Ann Marie Wallace, talked about what her organization does to help businesses owned by women.
“The Women’s Business Center of Utah is a non-profit entrepreneurial center that is funded in part by federal dollars, so your taxpayer dollars come around to help you again. The center has been around since 1997 providing one-on-one advising and training at no cost or very little cost to women and also men around the state. So, we help women start and grow their own businesses,” Wallace explained.
The center reached out to Dr. Susan Madsen and her team at USU to get a better understanding of their recent research. Wallace said women who are in business in Utah generally were found in the service sector.
“Because women like to help others and that’s kind of ingrained in us. So, the service industry compared to products, that’s where we find most women, but not all. And I think there’s a shift towards more product-based. But that’s why women were so heavily impacted by the pandemic where so many service related businesses were greatly impacted by such a reduction in orders and shopping.”

predominant culture prefers women to not wear pants and “dont talk too much” in councils, i wonder if that is a challenge for women business owners.
