LOGAN — A 37-year-old former Logan man has been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a young girl ten years ago. Guillermo “Gizmo” Farias was ordered to serve a term of 10-years-to-life, after a judge said sex abuse crimes cannot be tolerated by society.

Farias was sentenced Monday in 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal days before the case was headed for trial, pleading guilty to one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

Defense attorney Shannon Demler, who was instrumental in working out a plea agreement after other defense attorneys failed to appear for hearings,  asked the court for a lighter sentence, explaining that Farias was a family man, who had been involved in volunteer and church groups previously. He also noted how his client had never done anything like this before, and had already served two years in jail while waiting for the case to be resolved.

Farias spoke briefly, telling the court he accepted responsibility for what he had done and knew that it had affected people around him.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Dane Murray claimed Farias didn’t deserve a lighter sentence. He said the defendant was dishonest and can’t be trusted.

In 2020, Logan City police officers were contacted by the victim. She described how Farias, a family acquaintance, raped her when she was 12-years-old.

The incident occurred when the girl and an 18-year-old family friend went to Farias’ residence in Logan. On that night, the girl was provided alcohol and fell asleep on a couch. She later woke up to discover the defendant pulling her from the couch and raping her as she pushed him away and told him “no.”

The victim called Farias during a recorded phone conversation with detectives. He said that he was on so many drugs at the time of the rape he couldn’t remember what happened. He was later arrested at his home in Wickes, Arkansas, and extradited back to Utah.

During Monday’s sentencing, Judge Angela Fonnesbeck ordered Farias to be transferred to prison immediately. She said she would recommend he be given credit for the two years already spent in jail.
