Challenger for the office of County Executive appears on KVNU’s For the People

Write-in candidate for Cache County Executive, Marc Ensign, talks to KVNU's For the People host Jason Williams on 9/19/2022

LOGAN — Local businessman Marc Ensign has jumped into the race as a write-in candidate to face off against current Cache County Executive David Zook in November.

On KVNU’s For the People program on Monday, Ensign explained why he decided to run.

“Since the initial filing deadline earlier this year, multiple concerns have emerged concerning the relationship between the county executive and the county council and county offices. I have been encouraged by many concerned parties to help restore order, trust and cooperation to our county government. And I know it’s an uphill battle, but I think it’s a battle that needs to be fought at this point,” he explained.

Ensign was asked what his view is of the role of the county executive.

“I go back to when our form of government, our county form of government was originally set up. Unlike most counties who have county commissioners, in this county we established a county council which is to function primarily like a board of directors would in a private company. Then the county executive works with the council, but the county executive’s primary responsibility is to work with the 35 different county departments to provide services to members of the county.”

Ensign said he believes the county executive functions as a liaison between the county council, which is like a legislative branch that sets policy, makes laws and determines spending with the county offices that have the responsibility of actually carrying out the functions of government.

    Ensign has my vote!

There seem to always be some business people that want to run government like a business. Government is not a business that wants to make a profit. Almost every time a business person gets into government there will be a disaster or a scam on taxpayers where that business person in government decides to pass legislation that enriches them. Zook understands government, Ensign understands business. I’ll buy pizza from Ensign, and I’ll vote for Zook who understands government.

Sorry my friend, but you have it backward. Those who enter Government from the private sector usually succeed. It is when government people enter the private sector that the wheels fall off. The scams on taxpayers come from well-seasoned politicians who know how to work the system, and hide their malfeasance. Cache County needs a leader like Ensign who is honest, capable, and loves this valley, not someone who is using us as a stepping-stone to further his political career.

Mr Yost, maybe you ought to check into the Cache County Corporation. It exists and has been incorporated just like any other business.

Ensign is delusional. Please read his many letters to the editor before placing him in a position that effects the public. Mental illness is prevalent and I feel like we need to get him the help he needs.

Every comment you post on CVD is either critical, or a personal attack. Ensign does not write letters to the editor but has been a commentator on CVD for some time. His articles are the best thing on the website. Read any of them and notice the even handedness, objectivity, open mindedness, and wise counsel. I seriously believe the mental illness you are referring to is your own Mr. Smith.

I would say a majority of comments in comment section such as this would critical. Notice how your comment directed at me was critical and even had a personal jab. I get it!
I’ll try and throw in an atta boy here and there though, if you’ll think better of me. As for Mr. Ensign and his belief in the pretend (a true mental illness), I’m pretty sure you share his childish beliefs and so his “council “ would look pretty wise.
Next time before you comment, perhaps you should think objectively about your own thoughts and words. That way you won’t come across looking ridiculous and pathetic.

You consider Mr. Ensign’s belief in God, and his faith-themed commentaries as pretend. You call faith a ‘true mental illness.’ If that’s so, it’s an illness shared by the majority. You are entitled to your atheist beliefs but they do not determine what is pretend and what is real for others.

JRH – what I’m going to ask you will sound ridiculous, but I’m serious. Please humor me and really consider this exercise:

If I walked up to you on the street and told you that Barney, the purple dinosaur who entertains children, was really a heavenly being and that my pet turtle spoke to me and told me that if I followed Barney’s teachings that I’d live forever someday. How would you react? And take it another step, what if Barney created rules that I needed to follow – like lettuce was forbidden, that women born in March were to never marry and that the 2nd week of June every year no one could work and whatever amount of money you would usually make should be send to a PO Box in Logan. But not only did I have to follow this, but all of society. How would you feel? The premise seems absurd, right? A fictional dinosaur and a talking turtle – can you imagine? But if I believed this whole heartedly, because it was my belief – I’m sure you’d respect it and participate with me, right? Or would you think I might be off my rocker?

You’re wrong, JRH, real is real and fake is fake. God is pretend. Those that keep playing chicken with each other on the subject, even know they know deep down it’s fake, they are either in on the con or touched in the head. Just like I would be if I worshiped Barney. Grow up.

Nobody can force another to believe or disbelieve in God. You are free to believe in whatever you want to just as everyone else is. A couple of questions I will present to you is: why do you spend so much of your energy trying to convince others that God doesn’t exist? Why are you so threatened by others’ belief in God? Many doctors, physisicts, geologists, anthropologists, biologists, have publicly professed that they embarked on their scientific careers/journeys as atheists, yet after encountering inexplicable phenomenon along their life paths, found the only logical conclusion to be drawn was that there is indeed a Creator. You scoff at the faithful as if we are weak, stupid, and insane for believing when in fact it is our faith in God that makes us strong. That gives us the courage to know what is right and wrong and to remain true despite criticism and ridicule from others. I truly hope you will learn how to let yourself try to overcome your obvious anger at God for whatever reason you have. I challenge you, Joseph Smith to honestly tell God how angry you feel, why you’re so angry/hurt, and ask him, “If you really exist, show me that you are there.” And he will. God bless you.

I can’t tell if this is supposed to be a joke or if you’re serious. People have been making up gods since Moses wore short pants – just kidding, it was long before that. Money, power and sex. Take a look at any religion and it was started for those three things.

Listen, I know there is a lot of good things that come out of religion, but there is also a lot of bad. Plus, and more importantly it’s fake. I disagree with you that people can’t force their beliefs on others. Cults are full of brainwashed people that have done just that. And there’s nothing that says educated people can’t be duped, too.

For over 40 years I’ve stayed quiet and let people believe what they want even though it meant I had to, in part, play make believe with them. But I have two big reasons why I’m vocal now. 1.) I’m torn on a human level if I should standby while people with mental illness suffer and weak minded people get duped by tricksters and conmen in sheep’s clothing. People are weak and I feel guilty for not helping my brothers and sisters. 2.) Most churches have pushed their teachings and beliefs on others. It’s not just the mormons, it’s everyone. And lots of what they teach is hateful, sexist, homophobic ,racist and narrow minded. People’s critical thinking has vanished and because they believe in on fictitious story, it’s easy to believe in conspiracy theories or lies.

It may not look like it, but my comments really come from a place of caring and compassion.

God is not in any religion. The religions of today have removed him. God can be found in the Bible, his creations, and in ourselves. I am certain God is not happy about the mockery and travesty we have made of religion in his name. It’s ironic that your username is Joseph Smith considering what his role was in the LDS church. Here’s my two cents for whatever it’s worth: read the Bible, not necessarily the King James Version as it was written to make it more difficult for people to understand and make a connection with God as that role was reserved for the elites of the church. Seriously though, I don’t belong to any religion, yet I found God in the Bible and he has manifest his presence and existence in my life beyond any doubt. You don’t have to belong to these religions in order to find him. Maybe even ask for a Bible study with a Christian. I think you’d be surprised at what is actually written in the Bible versus what religions teach us is. I hope you take up the challenge I wrote of above. God is there and he will show you he’s there if you honestly ask him to. He has promised this and God does not go back on his promises. You are also free to discard what I have written. The choice is yours. Besides, what do you have to lose in trying?
