PORTLAND, ME – At a bipartisan political gathering in Portland, Maine, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox was elected vice chair of the National Governors Association on July 14.

As the NGA vice chair, Cox will oversee the group’s Center for Best Practices, the only research and development office serving the nation’s governors.

“I’m honored to serve as NGA vice chair,” Cox said after his election by the leaders of 55 states, territories and commonwealths gathered for their national summer meeting. “I look forward to working closely with governors from every state and territory.”

Cox’ election to head the best practices center was a no-brainer. Utah is the model for best practices among U.S. states.

The state’s robust list of accolades is impressive. Utah is the best-managed state in America and the number one state for economic outlook and recovery.

Utah is also considered the best state for private sector job growth; for entrepreneurship; for upward mobility; and, for the middle class opportunity.

States are where the most creative problem-solving happens,” Cox added. “I’m eager to help our federal partners learn from governors and states to find common sense solutions for the nation’s biggest problems.”

Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association is the voice of the leaders of 55 states, territories and commonwealths.

Through NGA, governors identify priority issues and deal with matters of public policy at the state, national and global levels.

NGA is the premier resource for not only governors but also for their cabinet members, state policy experts, the U.S. Congress and private enterprise.

NGA offers an array of services to help collaboratively tell the states’ story. NGA teams are able to work side-by-side with state leaders to identify challenges, help governors stay ahead of the curve and offer solutions before challenges become problems.

Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey was elected chair of the NGA on Thursday.

Cox and Murphy assumed their new roles immediately and will serve for one year.
