LOGAN — A 24-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to prison for attacking a woman while on a date more than two years ago. Muhannad Khalaf Alshammari was taken back into custody after apologizing for what he did.

Alshammari was sentenced in 1st District Court Monday morning. He previously pleaded guilty to one count of attempted aggravated kidnapping, amended to a second-degree felony; and two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

According to prosecutors, Alshammari met the victim on a dating app and the two agreed to go out Dec. 13, 2019. After consuming THC edibles, while at the defendant’s residence, Alshammari grabbed a frying pan and began striking her with it. He then began chocking and punching her.

After harming the woman, Alshammari blocked the door and kept her inside the residence while he prayed as to whether or not he should kill the woman. She was later allowed to leave and was treated at a hospital for her injuries.

During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Joseph Rupp said Alshammari was not a bad person and was sorrowful and ashamed about what happened. He claimed that his client became violent after believing that the victim had an embarrassing video of him on her cellphone.

In a letter, read by a victim advocate, the victim said she thought Alshammari was going to kill her on the night of the crime. She described being in constant paranoia since then and asked the court to sentence the defendant to as much prison time as possible.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Griffin Hazard agreed with the victim, asking for a lengthy prison sentence. He showed photos of the woman’s injuries to the court.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck said she was exceptionally troubled with the physical and emotional injuries caused by Alshammari. She agreed with the victim and Hazard, sentencing the defendant to one-to-15 years in prison.

The exact length of time Alshammari serves in prison will be determined by the Utah State Board of Pardons and Parole. He will likely be deported after being released.
