Gov. Cox releases second chapter of coordinated water plan

SALT LAKE CITY – Gov. Spencer Cox and state agencies have released the second chapter of Utah’s Coordinated Action Plan for Water.

“Water conservation must be a group effort, from families and individuals to farmers, businesses and local governments,” said Cox. “We all need to be part of our water solution.”

Chapter 2 is entitled Vibrant Communities. It outlines conservation effort which can and should betaken by local and state government as well as businesses, neighborhoods and households, to ensure access to safe and reliable drinking water and strategies to improve the quality of water as it leases communities.

Chapter 1 of Utah’s Coordinated Action Plan for Water was entitled Investing in Infrastructure. It was released in January.

Utah’s Coordinated Action Plan for Water is a collaboration between the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget (GOPB), the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Department of Environment Quality (DEQ) and the Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF).

Establishing a statewide water cooperative action plan that prioritizes conversation, storage, agriculture preservation and use optimization is one of the objectives of the One Utah Roadmap, according to the governor.

“Meeting the challenge of creating a more resilient water future for our state relies on our ability to find localized solutions, prioritize sustainable growth and make wise, multigenerational investment in our communities,” said Kim Shelley, executive director of DEQ.

The plan will be released in a series of four chapters throughout 2022.

Maintaining communities that are great places to live, work and play requires a holistic approach to managing water resources,” according to Brian Steed, executive director of DNR. “That includes increased conservation of water and generation innovation.”

The remaining chapters of the plan, entitled Productive Agriculture and Healthy Water and Watersheds, will be released in July and October 2022.
