LOGAN — Attorneys are working on a possible plea agreement for Brody V. Coates, the 38-year-old Nibley man arrested in July for allegedly having sex with an underage boy at a local motel.

Coates participated in a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Monday afternoon, appearing by web conference with his attorney. He was previously charged with three counts of forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony; enticing a minor over the internet, a second-degree felony; and, furnishing alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor.

Defense attorney Kevin Vander Werff told the court, prosecutors had given them a plea deal. Details were not disclosed. He asked for several weeks to review the offer with Coates.

Prosecutors claim Logan City police officers began investigating Coates after the alleged victim, who lives in Brigham City, reported engaging in sex acts with the suspect at the Econo Lodge Inn and Suites.

The victim told officers, he met Coates through a social networking and online dating app. The two allegedly exchanged sexually explicit photographs of each other before agreeing to meet.

During Monday’s hearing, Judge Angela Fonnesbeck granted attorneys time to review the plea deal. She ordered Coates to appear again in court Oct. 26.

Coates is currently out of jail on $70,000 bail. He could face up to life in prison if convicted.

This does not suprise me at all. When I worked at Conservice he was a trainer there. One day one of my coworkers caught Brody removing a camera from inside the mens bathroom. He immediately reported it to HR and the HR Director called Brody in with the coworker and questioned him about it. After this happened the coworker started getting numerous write ups for things and was eventually fired. What happened to Brody he got a promotion.

Sounds like there’s more to the story then just your friend getting write ups just cause he accused him of putting a camera in the bathroom (which who would do that, really? If someone was really going to do that, they’d be a little more discrete about it) and I’m betting there’s more to the story then what your claiming about these write ups of your friend.

You have to be 18 to be on the app. That kid lied about his age, and obviously went over to Logan. This is the kind of stuff that makes real rape victims get overshadowed. If a kid is lying about his age, and is saying he is an adult then he should be treated like one. Also if you’re on an app exchanging nudes, and you go to meet someone, what do you expect? Obviously he went over there with the intentions of having sex, and if he was on an app that you HAVE to be 18 on to sign on to how would he have known he wasn’t? This is BS and hurts the victims of real rape. The kid should be getting in trouble more then anything for acting like an adult. You wanna act like an adult that we should treat you like one. In the user agreement for any dating/hook up app it says you have to be 18 to sign up, and he agreed to that. So unless age was discussed then there is no way this dude could know. Also victim lives in Brigham. And alleged perpetrator lives in Cache valley. You can’t possibly thing that the underage boy went over there thinking that they’d just hang out together. It would be one thing if he came over to Brigham but I’m sorry, this sounds to much like a boy who wanted to get laid and then after. Wanted to cry wolf. It’s pretty sad that I know more sex offenders who are sex offenders for nothing to do with forcing people to do anything, yet they’re labeled/same category as a rapist. And guess how many actual rapists I know? 0. Maybe If underage boy wasn’t on an app that is for adults he wouldn’t have got him in the situation he did. But to turn him in for something that he asked for because he lied, is just BS and that kid should be reprimanded for possibly ruining someone’s life cause he wanted to be an adult.
