LOGAN – Candidate for governor and former speaker of the House Greg Hughes was a guest on KVNU’s For the People program on Thursday. As the Republican primary looms ahead on June 30th, he said his campaign has been a lot of fun and it’s really opened his eyes.

“Town hall meetings, cottage meetings – socially distanced, of course – the local leader lunches and breakfasts before we had the self-quarantine and then since May we started kind of meeting again, keeping the distances. But I tell you what, learning about people’s lives from the context of their lives, and their perspective, whether it be their family, business, their neighborhood, their community…man I’ve learned a lot,” Hughes said.

He said the coronavirus and its effect is still the hot button issue when he talks to people across the state.

“Such a big issue and it’s impacting our lives in so many different ways. I mean, constitutional liberties are feeling like they’re being threatened or taken away. You’ve got people’s household income being interrupted, you have businesses that people are afraid are being closed. As I was on the line, I heard the request from Cache County, they want to go to green, they’ve been told they have to stay at yellow, we got this color code.”

He said there are issues he hears about such as growth, and the lopsided draw the four counties around the Wasatch Front attract with congestion, traffic and the high cost of living. Then there are at least 22 counties trying to provide incentives to keep communities from shrinking in population. Hughes will be in Logan on Monday, June 15th, at 7:30p.m. at Merlin Olsen Park. After listening, I actually like this guy better now. I thought his whole campaign was based on his love for Trump, but he actually has some sensible ideas for our state.
