School foundation hands out nearly $160,000 in classroom grants throughout Cache County School District

LOGAN – Recently, the Cache Education Foundation awarded approximately $160,000 in grants to over 800 classrooms in the Cache County School District. Each grant was for $200 or less to provide non-consumable resources in the classroom like calculators, books, Chrome books, hands-on math resources and more. Cache Education Foundation Director Teri Lewis says these Tools for Schools grants fill in gaps that normal school budgets don’t fill.

“The resources that teachers request,” Lewis explains, “are resources that they normally wouldn’t have in their classrooms due to restrictive budgets.”

The foundation raises the money for the Tools for Schools grants from a summer golf tournament and through generous donations from businesses and community members. Lewis says 100% of all money raised goes directly to the Tools for Schools grant program. The number of grants that were awarded this year is an all-time high for the foundation.

“The funds were distributed in late December so the teachers are now busy ordering their resources and implementing those into the classroom as we speak.”

Now that those mini grants have been awarded for classrooms, the foundation is shifting gears to reward teachers individually through its Hats Off awards.

“These awards are sponsored by local community members or business owners who support education and want to help us reward teachers,” says Lewis.

The Hats Off award is a $500 check and is delivered by the business, or award sponsor, at an end-of-year school assembly in front of the entire studentbody and faculty of that teacher’s school.

Lewis says it’s easy to nominate a teacher in the Cache County School District for this award and the foundation is currently taking nominations for the next few weeks.

“We have extraordinary teachers in the Cache County School District,” she adds. “It’s always a pleasure to reward those teachers for their hard work and dedication to the success of the students. Those students become our future leaders. We appreciate the hard work and effort the teachers in the Cache County School District put forth.”

Lewis says there is only one stipulation on the $500 award when it is given to teachers.

“Most teachers use their own money to support their classrooms. With this award, we require that they just spend it on themselves. We want to reward them personally, and this is one way we can do that.”

Nominations can be made on the foundation’s website, cefut.org, or through the Cache County School District website. Nominations are open until Friday, March 6.

“We just couldn’t do it without the support of the whole community.”
