BRIGHAM CITY – Alana Blumenthal, originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the new Brigham City Art and History curator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and History from Lawrence College in New York and comes to Brigham City from Colorado.
Everything is new and she is trying to go through the mountains of exhibits and artifacts.
“I enjoyed my time in Colorado and being in the mountains,” she said. “I applied and they showed interest, but then they changed the job description and wanted me to reapply, so I did.”
She said it just seemed like this is where she was supposed to be.
“Here I am,” she said. “For the first 10 years I was thrown a lot of challenges and they all lead me here.”
The new curator’s specialties include project research, cataloging, artifact and archival storage. Blumenthal also has experience with exhibit design, public education, interpretation, creating and facilitating international partnerships. She has done her fair share of grant writing, team management, and office administration.
“As curator of the Montgomery County Government I was responsible for turning the Sunrise Mill into a public historic park and museum,” she said. “I also spent time in Alaska as Curator of Collections and Exhibits for the Kodiak Historical Society.”
Blumenthal spent over five years as the curator and director of administration at the Loudoun Museum in Leesburg, Va.
She said there are a lot of stories to tell in Brigham City and Box Elder County.
“I’d like to do more with Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and tell the Shoshone and Hispanic histories and other stories.”
She said the team left by Kaia Michaelis, the former Director and Curator/Historian, is great.
“They are a wonderful group to work with,” she said. “She did a really good job here.”
Outside of work, the new curator enjoys anything outdoors: hiking and snowmobiling. Skiing, however, may not be on her bucket list because of her knees.
The Brigham City Museum of Art & History, also known as the BCMG or, formerly, the Brigham City Museum-Gallery, is an art museum and history museum in Brigham City.
The museum covers more than 150 years of the history of Box Elder County with more than 10,000 objects.
Blumenthal also oversees the Box Elder Museum of Natural History.
