Hyrum museum exhibition highlights women’s suffrage

Hyrum City Library Curator Elisabeth Cropper shows the book the illustrations behind her came from. The traveling exhibit Utah Woman Making History will be on display until January 29.

HYRUM – The Hyrum City Museum, located at 50 W. Main St, has a display of illustrations from the book Champions of Change: 25 Women Who Made History. The book is written by Naomi Watkins and Katherine Kitterman and illustrated by Brooke Smart. The book released in August of last year coincides with three women’s rights anniversaries in the Beehive state.

The illustrations highlight Utah women and a few men who worked throughout the 20th Century to champion woman causes. The exhibit will run through January 29th.

The book and exhibition highlight women who excelled in politics, medicine, art, music, religion, tribal leadership, and more.

Director of the Hyrum City Museum Jami Van Huss said the authors of the book came to the library earlier to talk about the importance of their work.

Utah women were the first women in the United States to vote by 50 years,” Van Huss said. “Some of the women in the exhibit may have local ties.”

There is a brief description of the women and their achievements accompany the pictures.

Kick-off this year of celebration at the museum by visiting in January to experience the traveling exhibit, “Utah Women Making History. The exhibit will run through January 29th.

The museum is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 noon until 6 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
