Cache Community Connections announces their Dr. Martin Luther King program

LOGAN – Logan’s 10th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration sponsored by the Cache Community Connections will be held at the Logan Tabernacle at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10. This year’s speaker will be Pastor Daryell Jackson from the historic Trinity African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, one of the oldest in the West, on 6th South in Salt Lake City.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “We Have a Dream for Cache Valley.” The interfaith event is free and open to the public and will include visions for peace, choral and orchestral numbers, and other speakers besides Pastor Jackson.

Richard West, a board member of the leadership of Cache Community Connections, has spoken with Pastor Jackson and was impressed with him.

“He is wonderful guy,” West said. “When I reached out to him he was very animated and I think he will be great speaker.”

West said last year they held a candle light vigil that was really special.

“We did it in partnership with Utah State University’s Black Student Union,” he said. “They handed us small candles as we walked around and sang.”

Cache Community Connections is a group of local religious, civic, and business leaders in Cache Valley who first came together to organize an interfaith memorial service following the tragic events on September 11, 2001. Working together was such a positive experience that the group agreed to continue meeting monthly to foster understanding and cooperation among all religious groups in Cache Valley.

The Trinity African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is the oldest continuously-operating black church in the state of Utah. Rev. T. Saunders organized the Trinity AME in 1890 when Salt Lake City was the capital of Utah Territory.

The early date of founding reflects the presence of black non-Mormon Christians in Utah during its early settlement. Although there were numerous black members of the Church.

Pastor Jackson has been a member of the AME Church since 1995. The Salt Lake City native has served in the Marine Corps and U.S. Army where he served for 29 years. As a member of the military, he received many medals of honor and commendation letters for his service to his country.
