Classes resuming at Mt. Logan Middle School after gas leak evacuation

LOGAN — Classes will resume Wednesday at Mount Logan Middle School after the building was evacuated Tuesday afternoon. The evacuation occurred at 2:45 p.m. after alarms went off, indicating a gas leak in the art room.

School Principal Paul Wagner told parents in an email that the unscheduled “hall check drill” and evacuation was out of caution for student’s safety. The Logan City Fire Department was called to the school and arrived within minutes of the alarms going off.

Fire fighters tested the air quality throughout the building and detected small amounts of carbon monoxide in the art room. The amounts were not deemed to be dangerous.

Wagner said as a precaution and as directed by the fire department, students and staff reentered the building and stayed in the auditorium and cafeterias for the final 25 minutes. Students were outside for approximately 20 minutes.

Fire fighters continued to check the art room and surrounding halls. They also checked gas levels through the kitchens.

Wagner apologized for the inconvenience. He explained that administrators met with representatives from Questar Gas to diagnose the source of the leak and confirmed that it came from the kiln. The amounts of gas were never a danger to students or faculty, and future issues should be avoided with some simple maintenance to the kiln.

Tuesday’s evacuation was the third time classes have been suspended, so the school could be cleared. Earlier this year, suspicious fires were found in the boy’s bathroom on two separate occasions. It was later determined that the fires were caused by students.
