USU soccer sends Seniors out victorious with 1-0 win over Boise State

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State soccer sent its seniors out with a win, posting a 1-0 victory over league-leading Boise State (16-4-0, 8-3-0 MW) on Friday afternoon in the 2019 season finale at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field. On a day honoring departing seniors Mealii Enos, Kanyan Merrill and Alecia Robinson, it was actually a pair of freshmen that recorded a goal and sealed the win for Utah State.

Freshman keeper Diera Walton totaled a career-high 11 saves and logged her sixth clean sheet of the year, matching the most shutouts by a freshman goalkeeper since the 2013 season. Walton faced 19 shots by Boise State, as the Aggies finished the match with five. Merrill led the Aggies with two shots, followed by freshman midfielder Megan Astle, junior defender Imelda Williams and junior midfielder Kami Warner each with one.

Astle made the most of her only shot of the game, blasting a screamer from outside the 18-yard box into the upper right corner in the 30th minute. The goal was Astle’s second of the year and her second game-winning goal, as well.

The match punctuates Utah State’s season, finishing with an 8-10-1 mark overall and a 3-7-1 ledger in the Mountain West.
