Donald Edward Jackson

February 17, 1935 – October 24, 2019 – (age 84)

Donald Edward Jackson, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully in his home in Logan, Utah, on October 24, 2019, surrounded by his wife and family. Don valiantly battled kidney disease for over five years, diligently going to dialysis three times per week, before finally succumbing to renal failure.

Don was born on February 17, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to George Edward Jackson and Nellie Marie Durtschi. He married Carroll Janiece Lind on July 2, 1956, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on May 25, 1967. Don and Carroll raised their two boys and five girls in Cottonwood Heights in the Salt Lake Valley.

Don attended Granite High School. He pursued a technical education, later graduating from Electronics School. Don worked at Tooele Army Depot as an Equipment Specialist for 29 years, which allowed him to travel across the country and abroad to South Korea.

In 1999, after retirement, Don and Carroll moved to his beloved St. Charles, Idaho, in the Bear Lake Valley where they lived for fourteen years before moving to Cache Valley for the final years of his life.

Don was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He loved serving in the Elders Quorum, Sunday School, Scouting and as a dedicated home teacher. Don was the great patriarch of his family, baptizing, blessing and ordaining his children, grandchildren, many of his great-grandchildren, neighbors and friends. Don was a righteous example and influence to his posterity, with a profound testimony of Jesus Christ, which served as a rock and pillar of strength for all of his family. When Carroll was called to be the Relief Society President, Don went above and beyond in his service supporting her. She referred to him as her third counselor. Don also served as a tour guide at the Paris, Idaho tabernacle for four years.

Don loved to vacation in his motorhome and enjoyed being a part of his Bounder motorhome group. He absolutely adored spending time with his family in Bear Lake and East Canyon camping and excelled at dutch oven cooking. Don went out of his way to care for the birds that visited his yard even if he had to trek in several feet of snow to feed them. He was a fan of and loved watching most every sport. The Days of 47 Parades were always sure to see Don and family in attendance as well as the Salt Lake Gulls games. Don was especially patriotic with a passion for the American flag, his country and for constitutional principles.

He loved and supported his children unconditionally in all their respective activities and pursuits. He dedicated time to coach his children in youth sports and activities, enjoyed taking his kids skiing, and took the time to build Pinewood Derby cars, which he enjoyed very much.

Whatever his family needed, Don was there. He babysat his infant granddaughter and took in many of his grandchildren in times of need. Don was like a father to many of his grandchildren and a pivotal role model especially in the lives of his grandsons. He made many, many sacrifices for the benefit of his grandchildren, which is yet another example of the unconditional love he had for his family.

Don taught his children about their heritage and instilled in them the value of remembering family that lived before them and the importance of nurturing relationships with posterity. For many years without fail, Don and Carroll would go to St. George, Utah to spend time with grandchildren during the holidays. He never missed a Memorial Day going to several different cemeteries to place flowers on the graves of his ancestors, children and grandchild.

When Don was asked what advice would he give to his loved ones he replied, “Follow the Lord, you can’t go wrong with that.”

Don is survived by Carroll, his lovely wife of 63 years, son David (Shauna), daughter Laurie Bishop (Wendy), daughter Susan Bytendorp (Richard), daughter Janiece Sloan (Todd), daughter Carolee Bates (Ron), 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and brother Bob. His 21st great grandchild and his first great-great grandchild are to arrive in 2020. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Janet Barney, sister-in-law Helen Jackson, daughter Julie, son Mark, grandson Bryan Jackson, and great-grandson Logan Jackson.

The Jackson family would like to thank the Logan Regional Hospital Dialysis Center for years of dedicated and compassionate service, Encompass Home Health and Hospice for their exceptional care in his final days, Legacy House of Logan for their support and service and Dr. James Matthews for providing years of loving care.

A viewing was held on Sunday, October 27, 2019. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 11:00am. Interment will be at the cemetery in St. Charles, Idaho.
