Ken Heare admits “experience is great”, but how about a “fresh face”

LOGAN – While incumbents Tom Jensen and Jeannie Simmonds would like voters in November to consider their experience and years on the current Logan Municipal Council, Ken Heare, who is also running for one of three open council seats in the General Election said, “experience is great, but sometimes a fresh face and different look is good too.”

Heare lives in the Adams neighborhood with his partner and their dogs and says he has spent a lot of time walking the area, meeting new people, listening to their concerns and taking suggestions.

He said city leaders are addressing many of the concerns he’s hearing from residents – issues like affordable housing, traffic and creating community centers. So, what makes Heare different?

“Getting me,” he said, “I come with a different perspective. I come without an agenda. I know we need to address air quality and traffic, but at the end of the day I think it’s my responsibility on the city council to take the input of residents, the different departments, the information that is given to us to make a good educated decision.”

Heare added, “That’s what I spent my adult life doing, negotiating, mediating those conversations and making sure we bring everybody to the table to make those decisions. That’s what my focus is and that’s why I’m running.”

The 15-year Logan resident said he also hears from people who want to know what the city is doing to help keep our air clean and free of pollution.

“One of the biggest things we need to do is use our influence and have our residents keep our elected state and federal officials accountable for that,” he said. “They’re the one’s that make the laws on emissions. We can educate our citizens.”

Heare also supports residents utilizing public transportation, biking and walking when possible.

As the largest city in Cache County, decisions made by leaders in Logan often directly impact residents throughout the valley, admitted Heare. During a recent election forum, he said “what we do here has a lot of effect in the county…what we have to remember is we also have budgetary limitations to what we can do for the county.”

“We have to remember that whoever is elected to the Logan Municipal Council has a fiduciary responsibility to our citizens first and foremost. Knowing that, though, we don’t live in a bubble,” he said.

“I would love to see a countywide library program. If that’s something we can spearhead and make sure we have financial contributions, those are the kinds of things that we need. It would be great if we could get a county wide and county funded program for the humane society,” he added.

If elected, one area Heare would like to focus on is “to take a little more care in addressing our residents and considering their concerns on different issues.”

“I approach everything with these three C’s in mind,” he said, “communication, collaboration and community building. As long as we focus on these three things, I think what ever decision we make will be a good one and I think people will be happy with it.”
