Utah State University’s Year of the Woman celebration kicked off Monday at a gathering in Logan of those interested in celebrating significant voting rights anniversaries.
Joyce Kinkead, Distinguished Professor of English, said there are three important voting rights milestones in 2020.
”They are 1870, Utah women go to the polls, and they are absolutely the first in the nation,” Kinkead explained, “so it’s a real point of pride for the state; 1920, a hundred years next year, and that was national suffrage; and then, the voting rights act of 1965.”
USU President Noelle Cockett and Logan Mayor Holly Daines spoke briefly at the event at the president’s official residence in Logan. Mayor Daines talked of the importance of encouraging more young women toward involvement in public service.
“Sometimes we take for granted the many rights and privileges we have,” Daines added, “and we need to celebrate those women that fought for those rights and also to carry those rights forward.
“I mentioned the registration to vote as the percentage of turnout we have in our elections. We really need more women to get involved, to vote and to have more women’s voices in government.”
President Cockett said Year of the Woman will honor achievements of women past and present who have been a force in USU’s history.
The Year of the Woman is co-chaired by Dr. Kinkead and Sydney Peterson, secretary for USU’s Board of Trustees.
This is how they treat intelligent women, shame on the university. Neglegency and racism, a terrible combination and ,of course, the white wash, let us not forget how they have no accountability. https://nextshark.com/utah-state-malaysian-student/
