Utah State University faces lawsuit in death of student

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A lawsuit has been filed against a northern Utah university in the death of a student.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that 24-year-old Jerusha Sanjeevi killed herself in April 2017 and a lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of her parents against Utah State University.

Attorneys say Sanjeevi repeatedly reported that she was bullied by classmates and university personnel did not respond adequately.

Officials say the lawsuit includes claims of gross negligence and civil rights violations for discrimination in an educational environment.

The university says it took appropriate action to address issues between students and will not comment on the specifics of the case.

Experts told the Tribune many factors could have contributed to decisions leading to suicide.

Officials say Sanjeevi enrolled at Utah State in the fall of 2016.
