Thermo Fisher preparing for major expansion in Logan

Thermo Fisher Scientific, located at 1726 Hyclone Drive on the south end of Logan, will be undergoing a more than $30 million expansion

LOGAN – Over $30 million will be invested in a plant and processes upgrade for the Thermo Fisher Scientific facility in Logan over the next year-and-a-half. The facility located on the south end of Logan will double its capacity and will result in several hundred new jobs for the area. Dustin Warner is the operations lead for the Logan facility and says it’s an exciting time for Thermo Fisher right now.

“It’s a great opportunity to be a part of Thermo Fisher and, certainly, to see this expansion coming to Cache Valley is great,” Warner exclaims. “We had our CEO Mark Casper visiting the valley (recently) and commented on how beautiful it is and how wonderful it is to see this expansion taking place here.”

Between two sites in Cache Valley, Thermo Fisher Scientific has approximately 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The expansion project at 1726 Hyclone Drive will double that capacity.

“We’ve got a pretty good (research and development) department located here in Logan. We are continually striving to find new products and new engineering solutions for some of our customers’ problems,” Warner says. “This expansion is focused primarily on additional capacity for what we are currently manufacturing.”

The Logan facility manufactures what is referred to as bioprocess containers, used for large scale pharmaceutical and drug manufacturing. The containers are made of polyethylene film that is welded together to contain liquids. The single-use bags are then shipped all over the world.

“We’ve already kicked off the project. We’re moving dirt right now, actually, in the field,” says Warner. “We expect the facility to be done in 2020 and as we bring in all the additional equipment that will be needed that will stretch into 2021 before it’s fully qualified and ready for use.”

Thermo Fisher Scientific employs over 900 people in Cache Valley. Besides those who will be employed in the building construction, Warner expects the company to add several hundred more full-time employees to fill the added capacity.

“As soon as the expansion is completed, we will immediately start hiring,” explains Warner. “We are anticipating needing…roughly 200 employees to staff the expansion right as it kicks off. Obviously, there will be more room to grow from there. ”

Warner, who has been at the Logan facility for 16 years, says there will be a good mix of jobs with the expansion, from entry-level technicians on the shop floor all the way up to senior-level roles with quality assurance and sales.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a $24 billion company which employees 70,000 people at 3,000 sites all over the world. The company is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.
