Samuel “Old Mont” Monte Thomas

December 8, 1928 – July 5, 2019 (age 90)

Samuel Monte Thomas, known as “Old Mont” passed away Friday, July 5, 2019 at the age of 90.

He was born December 8, 1928 in Malad City, Idaho to Samuel Daniel Thomas and Elsie Gibson Thomas.

He joined the Navy in December 1945 at age 17 to serve his county. He served on the USS Abatan.

Monte married Maureen Camp on December 8, 1948 until her death on July 30, 1993. They had 3 children, Annette (Verlin) Williams, Max (Lisa) Thomas, and Mark (Amy) Thomas all of Malad City, Idaho. He is survived by his children and 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and his sister Norma Thomas, also of Malad.

He later married LaJuana T. Atkinson on January 30, 1996 where his family increased with her 6 children, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They enjoyed each other greatly. She passed away February 1, 2012.

Monte worked as a U.S. Postal carrier for over 28 years in Southern California and retired in 1989 so that he could do what he loved best, FISH, fish and fish. He returned home to Malad to become the avid fisherman. In his earlier years he fished on the California coast, retired years the reservoirs around the Malad Valley. He also enjoyed cruising on the ocean. He went with his wives and family on over 50 cruises.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many positions.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 1:00pm in the Malad Second Ward, 20 South 100 West, Malad City, Idaho. Friends may visit with the Thomas family on Thursday night July 11, 2019 from 7:00 – 8:00pm at the church and again from 11:30am – 12:45pm before the service on Friday at the Malad Second Ward.
