Three congregations to carry the cross around downtown Logan on Good Friday

, Pastor Meghan Vail associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan, holds the cross used for The annual Stations of the Cross walk in downtown Logan on Good Friday.

You may see a procession of people walking behind a person carrying a big wooden cross on Friday. More than likely, it is part of a multi-congregational Stations of the Cross.

Pastor Meghan Vail associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan, carries the Cross used for Stations of the Cross to honor Christ at Easter.

The annual Stations of the Cross will be held on Good Friday, Pastor Meghan Vail associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan says.

“The Stations of the Cross is always held on the Friday before Easter,” Vail says. “This year it will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m.”

It will again be a joint collaboration with the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church of Logan and St. John’s Episcopal Church. The event will end at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

“We start with a prayer and hymn then we begin the walk,” Vail explains. ”We will stop 10 to 12 times, trade-off who carries the cross, read a verse from the Bible or give a thought.”

She says anyone who wants to carry the cross can, it’s kind of symbolic because the Bible says someone helped Christ carry his cross.

The procession will go downtown then circle the block that the Tabernacle is on and end up at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

At 7 p.m. Friday night St. John’s Episcopal Pastor Derek Forbes will speak. The event is really an acknowledgement of the night Jesus Christ died on the cross, Vail says.

“We read different accounts of Jesus’ death and we want to be reminded of the suffering of Christ before the resurrection on Easter Sunday,” she explains. “Thursday, at 7 p. m., we will have a symbolic foot washing and a celebration with a typical communion of bread and wine.”

She says they rotate pastors for the Thursday night service. This time it will be Rev. Teri Hermsmeyer of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Logan. On Good Friday, the three churches will have services in their respective buildings at 7 p.m.

“Sunday we will have a Sunrise Service at one of the member’s homes beginning at 6 a.m.,” she continues. “Then, we will have our regular Sunday services at 9 a.m and 11 a.m.”

They expect to have about 50 to 60 people at their Easter program.
