LOGAN — A 64-year-old Salt Lake City man is headed to prison for trying to seduce a Cache County teenager to have sex with him. Carl Callahan was sentenced to between 1-to-15-years behind bars after previously pleading guilty to one count of enticing a minor over the internet, a second-degree felony.
Callahan appeared in 1st District Court Monday afternoon.
Sheriff’s deputies began investigating Callahan after the teenage boy’s parents contacted detectives. They reported that Callahan had used a messaging app to send inappropriate material, in an attempt to groom the victim.
According to the investigation, Callahan is an acquaintance of the victim’s family. The messages were being exchanged around June 2018.
Detectives said even though it appeared from the messages that Callahan wanted to have sex with the teen, he never did.
This isn’t the first time Callahan has faced similar charges. Court records show he was convicted of a similar crime in Salt Lake City. In 1987, he pleaded guilty to one count of attempted sexual abuse of a child, a third-degree felony, and was sentenced to serve up to five years in prison.
