LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior guard Sam Merrill has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, as announced by the league offices on Monday morning. The award is Merrill’s first this season and first of his career.

Against the Aztecs, Merrill scored a team-best 19 points, shooting 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from the floor, 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from behind the 3-point line and 100.0 percent (6-of-6) at the free throw line, and added five rebounds and one block. For the week, Merrill averaged 24.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, playing the entire 40 minutes in each game.

In addition to his MW recognition, Merrill was also named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week. It is the fourth time this season that Merrill has been recognized as USU’s Student-Athlete of the Week. With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

Utah State closes out its regular season on Tuesday, facing Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on AT&T Sports Net (DirecTV 683, Dish 414, Comcast 52). A Utah State victory in the game will give the Aggies at least a share of the Mountain West regular season championship.
