Sky View controls from the tip in dominating win over Mountain Crest

Sam Phipps started the game on a 7-0 run by himself to get the Bobcats started and Mountain Crest could never overcome that in a 64-48 loss. The Mustangs got within six with just under two-and-a-half minutes left in the first before a flurry of turnovers killed their momentum, finishing with just eight points in the quarter.

After Huber went off for 37 points for Bear River last Friday, the Mustangs faced a bigger test in Utah Utes commit Mason Falslev, averaging 25.5 points per game. Falslev finished with 22 but no matter what combination of defenders Coach Kevin Anderson threw at him, Falslev couldn’t be stopped and went to the line seven times, making all of them. At the half, Falslev had 14 points and the Mustangs only had 18. Phipps finished with 11 points and Jon Bergeson was the other Bobcat in double figures with 12.

Fresh off a 77-point outing and overtime win at home, Mountain Crest could not find their offense. The length of the Bobcat defense bothered them all night forcing 15 turnovers at half time and over 20 for the game. The Mustangs would make a slight run before a rash of turnovers would kill their momentum. In three of Mountain Crest’s four Region games they’ve scored 40, 44 and 48 points, three of their five lowest scoring games.

Kordell Welch had 32 against Bear River but was invisible against Sky View. He hit a three in the first quarter and never scored again. Austin Young was the only Mustang that was able to consistently score, finishing with 17. Marshall Nethercott was also in double figures with 11. After hitting nine 3-pointers against Bear River, the Mustangs were only able to hit three even though Sky View played zone all night.

The win moved Sky View into a tie atop Region 12 with Green Canyon and the loss dropped Mountain Crest to the bottom with Ridgeline.
