Judge rules: No bail for Logan man suspected of molesting four girl during past 20 years

LOGAN — A judge has refused to allow Rand S. Meyerhoffer to be released from jail on bail. The 45-year-old Logan man is suspected of sexually abusing four young girls during the past 20 years.

Meyerhoffer formally appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. He was arrested and charged last week with four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; and voyeurism, a class B misdemeanor.

Defense attorney Craig Chlarson asked the court to allow his client to post bail. He noted that Meyerhoffer has lived in the community for years and is the only financial supporter of his family. He explained the suspect had changed his life in the last three year and wasn’t the risk to society that he was years ago.

State attorney Barbara Lachmar disagreed. She claimed police found drugs in Meyerhoffer’s home, when they served a search warrant to the residence last week. She said, “The safety of society is at risk if he’s out.”

Judge Brian Cannell ruled that Meyerhoffer will continue to be held without bail but said attorneys can argue the matter further during a preliminary and bail hearing next month.

According to police, detectives began investigating Meyerhoffer after one of the alleged victims told their mother that the suspect had molested her. She described how he “patted” or “touched” her inappropriately, over and underneath her clothing.

As the investigation continued, three more alleged victims described similar incidents involving Meyerhoffer. The girls ranged in ages from 8 to 11-years-old when the suspected sexual abuses occurred. All of them were acquaintances of the suspect.

The fourth victim, who is an adult now, told police how Meyerhoffer molested her for more than nine years, until she was over 20-years-old. She explained how he would purchase alcohol and drugs for her while she was a teenager. He would also get her drunk and then ask her to expose herself, while he inappropriately touched himself.

The woman claimed that Meyerhoffer took pornographic photographs of her when she was a teenager. She also said he would play “strip poker” with her and another one of the victims.

When detectives interviewed Meyerhoffer, he admitted to taking pictures of “butt cracks.” He also acknowledged to playing strip poker with the victims “a long time ago.”

During Tuesday’s court appearance, Judge Brian Cannell ordered Meyerhoffer to appear again in court December 13.
