Malouf bedding is bursting with business

Scott Carr, brand manager for Malouof located in Nibley shows some of the expanded inventory in their showroom.

Malouf, at 1525 W. 2960 S., in Nibley is experiencing growing pains. The bedding company is adding 90,000 feet of office space to their headquarters.

The video production area at Malouf, located in Nibley, has moved three times and is waiting for the warehouse expansion to find a space to work.

“We are expanding the office space from 45,000 square feet to 130,000 square feet because, right now, we are overcapacity,” said, Brand Manager Scott Carr. “The building was built to handle 150 people, we have about 200 employees right now, and we plan to continue grow.”

The company needs to make room for more desks and more people.

Malouf is also creating a new showroom for their customers to see their expanded product line.  They are also expanding their creative marketing capabilities, specifically with photography and videography.

Sam Malouf has a business plan that is unique in the industry. He has a professional cook on hand to fix lunch at no cost for his employees. There is also a full-sized basketball gym, weight room and cardio room with the latest in treadmills and other equipment.

Malouf has cleared out its warehouse and is demolishing parts of it in order to add a photo and video studio area, as well as display space for their many products.

The office space is filled with windows open to the outside world.

Malouf also has a strategy in terms of personnel, he calls it, “Replace Yourself.”

“People are wearing many different hats,” Carr said. “Replace yourself: we are growing; the company is in a constant growth pattern. There may be a void and you work yourself into a new job description. That lets someone else fill in behind you. It a constant growth pattern.”

He said he’s not afraid to take chances to help grow the customer base and employees.

“Sam has a Master’s Degree in accountancy with a degree in Marketing. So he was schooled in business strategy,” Carr said. “Sam believes, if you try to treat your employees well, they will treat the customers well.”

What started off in 2003 as a mom and pop sheet shop, grew to the point they needed to hire their first employee in 2010. Eight years later, they have over 340 employees across the U.S. About 220 of the employees work in Logan. Besides the Nibley facility, Malouf has facilities in Garland, North Carolina, Ohio, and just opened one in Texas. “Our total warehouse space is 3.3 million square feet,” said Scott Carr.

The facilities in different parts of the country should cut customer wait times and shipping cost. The Texas facility could also facilitate international growth in Central and South America.

While in college, founders Sam & Kacie Malouf wanted upscale bedding. When realizing the cost, they set out to find a way to experience luxurious sleep at a lower price. Their passion led them to discover where and how to create high quality products at an affordable cost. Malouf has quality sheets that cost as little as $40 for microfiber sheets, or as much as $800 for sheets made with Italian fabric.

This rendering of the new showroom shows the wide open area that Malouf salesmen can bring clients to show their wares.

“We have become a one stop shop for bed stores,” Carr said. “We have expanded from sheets into mattresses, pillows and bed frames.”

“Retailers and consumers recognize detail in our award-winning product packaging, pricing and quality,” their website states.  “To complement our product, we organized a systematic infrastructure to ensure fast shipping and invaluable customer service.”
