Businesses giving shoes for Christmas

Casaundra Bath, Dr. Todd Freestone, Neicole Teare and Dr. Matthew Hedelius from Comprehensive Treatment Clinic are in the process collecting money to give shoes to needy children.

This time of year, companies, families and individuals may be looking for ways to help those in need. One of those businesses is Comprehensive Treatment Clinic. They have joined forces with Payless Shoesource and Cache Valley Bank to raise funds to provide shoes for local, underprivileged children for the holiday season.

The Cache Shoes 4 Kids boxes can be found in various locations around the valley. The donations will be used to buy shoes for area children.

Dr. Matthew Hedelius and Dr. Todd Freeston are clinical social workers at Comprehensive Treatment Clinic located at 40 West Cache Valley Boulevard, suite 10A. They specialize in addictions and trauma disorders. Every year, for the past 10 years, they have tried to brighten the holidays by helping under-privileged children have the gift of shoes. The two felt like there was a need in the community to put shoes on the feet of the less fortunate, especially in the winter. So, they came up with a plan to make that happen.

“Whatever donations we receive, Freestone and Hedelius match,” said Neicole Teare, the office manager.  “We don’t keep any money from the donations.”

There are several ways to donate. The clinic accepts cash, there is a special account set up at Cache Valley Bank for donations, and several area businesses have boxes for donations. You can also donate by phone with a bank card.

The staff is in the process of posting flyers on the doors of other Cache Valley businesses. They have already started accepting donations, and hope to finish by Dec. 14, before the students are out for the holidays.

“We hope to raise $6,000. Our goal is to give out 300 pairs of shoes to children in our community,” Teare said. “We work with the teachers at schools. They generally recognize students in need.”

Teachers can pull a student aside and give them the gift card without making a big deal in front of other students.

“We buy gift cards and the students can go to Payless Shoes and pick out the pair they like,” Teare said. “We feel like they have a feel for which kids could use shoes in their classes.”

“It’s different when you have them choose a pair of shoes rather than giving them shoes someone else picked out,” said Casaundra Bath, another member of the office staff. “We are trying to increase the number of shoes we buy each year.”
