Church opposes Proposition 2; offers a medical marijuana compromise

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is on record accepting medical marijuana as a matter of church policy. So why is the Church opposed to Proposition 2, the Medical Cannabis Act?

Marty Stephens, the Church’s Director of Community and Government Relations, said the church wants to avoid outcomes seen in other states where similar laws were passed.

“Typically, youth usage rates have gone up significantly, addiction rates have gone up, hospital visits have gone up,” said Stephens. “So we just want to make sure this is done the right way. We support the relief of human pain and suffering. But we also think it’s important to balance that with protections for children and we don’t believe that Prop 2 does that.”

Stephens said the Church has presented a compromise that supports making medical marijuana available to those it will help.

“Regardless of whether this passes or fails, we hope that this compromise is passed within the next 30-to-45 days after the election, that will help people have access to that, while protecting our children so that we don’t have unintended consequences.”

Stephens said Governor Gary Herbert recently agreed to call a special session of the legislature to consider the compromise bill.

“We have, with this compromise bill that was announced the first part of October, we believe we have a consensus. The Senate President was there, the Speaker of the House was there. The Governor was there speaking in favor of it.

“The Senate President said ‘I will do everything in my power to see that this passes’ in the special session. So I think we have finally come to that consensus.”
