The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Cache Valley and other areas of Utah, southeast Idaho and southwest Wyoming. The watch begins Tuesday morning and continues through late Tuesday night.
The projected heavy rain comes into the state from a hurricane moving north along Western Mexico.
“Moisture will surge north into central and northern Utah,” the weather service says, “beginning Tuesday in advance of Hurricane Rosa, allowing for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms which will be heavy at times.”
Flash flooding is a particular concern in areas affected by wildfires this year. Heavy rain on burn scars can result in debris flows, sending mud and charred wood down hillsides. The expected rain could also be a problem in areas of steep terrain and in urban areas with poor drainage.
The National Weather Service also urges caution for anyone planning on traveling in the backcountry this week. Streams and rivers are expected to run fast and high and there is a possibility that some trails could get washed out.
“Those planning to be outdoors next week should keep an eye on the weather forecast and make contingency plans.”
