Logan City’s third roundabout at 600 East and 500 North is nearing completion and the intersection should be cleared in the coming days.

Early last week, officials from contractor Staker Parson, JUB Engineers, Utah Department of Transportation and some subcontractors were on hand to inspect the project.

Logan City Engineer, Bill Young, said the group was on site making a punch list of items that need to be finished before the roundabout can be opened on Friday, August 17.

UDOT officials were on hand because some of the funding came from the federal government.

Among the finishing touches are landscaping and light installations.

Young said, “We are getting close to the contractual agreement to have it done before the start of USU. So we are on time with that contract.”

The project started in May, the Monday after Utah State University’s graduation.

Young said the advantage of round-a-bouts is cars aren’t stopping and backing up. They are a little more functional, handle traffic flow better, and they keep cars form protracted idling at intersections, cutting down on exhaust pollution.

Officials from Staker Parson (the contractors), JUB Engineers, UDOT and some subcontractors were on hand to inspect the roundabout at 600 East and 500 North in Logan recently.

Tyler Cady, Logan City’s design engineer on the project, said there were no major hang-ups.

According to Cady, the construction went just the way they expected except for normal construction hiccups that happen with this kind of road work.

“It went very well,” he said. And added that roundabouts keep traffic flowing.

“There is a new generation of drivers who don’t like to stop at intersections,” he continued, “they like to keep moving. We may see more of them if the application fits the intersection.”
