Crews fighting ‘human caused’ fire in Box Elder County

Firefighters are beginning to battle a fire in norther Utah, west of Portage. The Rough Canyon Fire was reported Wednesday afternoon.

Box Elder County public information officer Mitch Zundel said the blaze has burned approximately 1400 acres and is currently zero-percent contained. It is suspected to be human caused.

There are an estimated 40 people fighting the fire. They include crews from Portage, Plymouth, Fielding, Garland, Tremonton, Box Elder County, Forest Service, and the Utah Division of Fire Forestry and State Lands.

The fire is not threatening any structures and there are no evacuations in place. Investigators are trying to determine the exact cause.

Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands communications coordinator Leann Fox said fire managers are directing crews to do full suppression of the fire today. Multiple engines and handcrews, air attack, two bulldozers and a road grader are on scene.
