State School Board still looking at ways to improve school safety

The Utah Safe Schools Commission held a press conference this week to present recommendations to increase safety measures in Utah schools. Teryl Warner, a Cache Valley resident and member of the appointed commission, said there was dialogue with elected officials, stakeholders, parents, teachers, community members and students to help develop solutions that will increase safety measures to protect children across the state.

Warner talked about the project on KVNU’s For the People program on Monday.

“One of the things that I was really impressed with was the Tresset Group has a system called Duress,” explained Warner. “I believe both Cache and Logan (school districts) have it. Park City (School District) may have it. I think Canyons (School District) has it.

“We are actually going to continue pursuing this on the State Board of Education. This app is really interesting in that it will alert 911 if there is an emergency, or a school administrator, or law enforcement. But the difference between this company and most of the other companies we talk to is, this gives the teacher or the administrator an ability to communicate with 911.”

Warner is making a presentation at Tuesday’s meeting of the Cache County Council. Warner is also an incumbent candidate for the State Board of Education for District 1.
