SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah officials say they’re several months away from finalizing rules for narrow medical marijuana laws passed by the Legislature this year.

Department of Agriculture Deputy Commissioner Scott Ericson told state lawmakers Monday that the regulations aren’t expected to be published until after Utah voters weigh in on a broader medical marijuana initiative in November.

The rules would ensure the quality of cannabis oil extracts by requiring that the products be registered and tested against the listed ingredients.

Separate rules will create a system for growing and distributing marijuana for use by dying patients and researchers.

Utah voters will decide in November whether to support an initiative allowing for wider use of medical marijuana.

If it’s approved, Ericson says the initiative would impose tight deadlines on the state that it might not be able to meet.
