Local audiologist chimes in on Yanny vs Laurel debate

The Yanny vs. Laurel debate went viral last week and an audiologist at Logan’s Budge Clinic, Dr. Andrew Cobabe,  has a take on how individuals hear what they hear. He said it is like picking shapes in clouds.

“You see a turtle but a friend sees a frog,” said Dr. Cobabe. “And you can both be right. Same thing is happening here: both sounds are there and your brain may be tuned to pick out one over the other.”

Where did this originate?

”The actual sound file is a clip from vocabulary.com and it is a synthesized voice saying ‘laurel’. But as you go to that site and listen to the sound it’s obviously much more clear than the Yanni Laurel sound clip that we have all heard. So there is some distortion that’s evident in the original sound clip we have been hearing.”

Dr. Cobabe said if you are one who can’t hear either sound, it is time to get your hearing checked.
