Cache County School District celebrates student art, theater, music and film

Hundreds of students from throughout Cache County will be displaying and performing their works at Green Canyon High School Friday night from 5-9 p.m. Cache County School District Performing Arts Coordinator Delpha Hall and Visual Arts Coordinator Maele Shakespear say the fourth annual Celebration of the Arts is a showcase that students have been preparing for all year.

“We actually remind teachers at the beginning of the year,” says Hall. “Now that we’ve done this for a few years they know it’s happening. We remind them that we need performances and they need to be collecting student artwork to display for the evening.

“Teachers have been thinking about it all year long…we put up a performance sign up list in January and let all the teachers who wanted to participate sign up, as long as we have space.”

Hall and Shakespear say hundreds of students are participating in the event, either as performers, artists, musicians, or film makers. There will be approximately 20 pieces of art on display from each elementary, middle and high school in the district.

“We have student performances going on: choirs from elementary, middle school and high school; we have orchestras from several of the high schools and the middle schools; we have the Ambassador Orchestra from the Mountain West String Academy who will be performing; we have student films from Ridgeline that are being presented for a couple of hours at the beginning of the evening; and, we have the improvisation troupes from Mountain Crest High School and Ridgeline High School who will also be performing during the evening,” Hall explains. “We have jazz bands playing as well as student smaller ensembles and solos that will be going on during the evening.”

“We’re excited because this is the first year to include student-produced films as part of the celebration,” adds Shakespear.

Celebration of the Arts will be conducted in an open house format with displays and performances in the commons area, auditorium, choir room, theater room, lecture hall and other surrounding classrooms with people free to come and go between 5-9 p.m.

“We have wonderful performing arts in our district,” says Hall, “so many talented young people. We wish we could showcase everyone, but we get as many as we can so that’s good.”

Shakespear explains that the evening will be divided into 20-minute segments for performances, with 10 minutes in between to allow for performing groups to transition. To see a complete schedule, click here.

“The other thing we have available is a make-and-take art project,” Hall continues. “Those who attend can make art and take it with them if they’d like to.”

Besides the dozens and dozens of artwork displayed inside Green Canyon High School’s commons area, the district will be showcasing its latest Art in Transit Bus. A bus from the Cache Valley Transit District is wrapped with a piece of student artwork and there will be pieces of student artwork inside the bus also on display.

“The community here is incredibly supportive of the arts,” says Hall. “They support this event which makes it worthwhile. If we didn’t have audiences for the students, if people weren’t coming in and sharing the experience and looking at the artwork it would not be nearly as wonderful as it is for the students. But because of the community support it becomes a big event that is exciting to be a part of.”

“We have some phenomenal teachers in the district,” exclaims Shakespear. “They really care about their students and they have taught them so well. I think people who come tonight will be so impressed by what they see.”

Hall and Shakespear say there will be plenty of parking on the north side of Green Canyon High School.
