OGDEN — Suspended Logan High School teacher, Joseph “Scott” Harris made his first appearance before a judge. The 58-year-old Nibley man is suspected of having sex with a teenage girl.
Harris appeared with his defense attorney in 2nd District Court, Thursday morning. The hearing lasted only five minutes as Judge Michael Direda, read the six charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, prosecutors had filed. Each of the counts are third-degree felonies and carry a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted.
Defense attorney, Michael Edwards asked the court if he and Harris could return in a month, to decide whether they wanted to have a preliminary hearing. Judge Direda ordered them to appear May 17.
Weber County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Harris February 16, after finding him inside a car with a 15-year-old girl. The two were parked alongside a road in West Haven and were both partially undressed.
The girl later told deputies, she had met up with Harris multiple times for sex during the past six-and-a-half-weeks.
Harris was interviewed by detectives and said he met the girl online, claiming he thought she was 19-years-old but admitted she looked young. He described meeting up with her three times, engaging in multiple sex acts.
Harris was booked into the Weber County Jail. He was later released after posting $30,000 bail.
Harris has been a teacher at Logan High School for more than 30-years. He taught career and technical education (CTE) and oversaw the school’s daily news broadcasts. He has been placed on unpaid suspension, pending the outcome of the criminal case.
