East Carolina parts ways with athletic director Jeff Compher

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Jeff Compher is out after five years as East Carolina’s athletic director.

The school’s board of trustees on Friday approved a deal for Compher to step down on May 1. He will receive a buyout of up to $1.2 million spread over five years.

Compher became the target of fan protests as the football team struggled.

He fired popular football coach and ECU alumnus Ruffin McNeill in 2015 and hired Scottie Montgomery, who has led East Carolina to consecutive 3-9 finishes.

His replacement also will have to find a new basketball coach after Jeff Lebo resigned during his eighth season. East Carolina finished 10-20 and has not had a winning season since 2013.
