Police: Woman tries to open door during flight to Boise

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A woman was taken into custody following an attempt to open an aircraft door during a flight from San Francisco to Boise, Idaho, authorities said.

Boise police detained the woman after SkyWest flight 5449 landed safely Monday morning at the Boise Airport, the Idaho Statesman reported .

Flight operators had reported an “unruly passenger” to Boise Airport officials, who then contacted police, airport spokesman Sean Briggs said.

The passenger was restrained during the flight, and police met the aircraft at the gate, said Layne Watson, a spokesperson for SkyWest. All passengers safely left the plane.

The woman was placed in the custody of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, said Haley Williams, a Boise police spokeswoman. Police did not release additional information about the woman.

Scott T. Smith was sitting behind the woman during the flight. The California resident said the woman was seated with a companion in first class, and she appeared to be apprehensive when the flight departed.

Smith suspected the woman’s early strange behavior was the result of a fear of flying, he said. Later in the flight, Smith observed two men leave their seats and rush to the front. The passengers subdued the woman after she attempted to open the cabin door.

“I could see her laying on the floor,” Smith said. “The flight staff were real calm. Everyone on the flight was quite calm.”

Ada County prosecutors are reviewing the incident, but no criminal charges were immediately filed. A police and FBI investigation is ongoing.
