Spartans to play Wolverines in Big Ten semis…No official word on J.R. Smith’s departure from game… New NCAA football proposal

NEW YORK (AP) — Cassius Winston hit a go-ahead jumper with 7:17 to play today and No. 2 Michigan State won its 13th straight game, beating Wisconsin 63-60 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. It was the Spartans’ third win over Wisconsin this season, Miles Bridges led the Spartans with 20 points and Winston finished with 17 in advancing to the semifinals Saturday against No. 15 Michigan.

NEW YORK (AP) — Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 21 points and Moe Wagner had 20 as No. 15 Michigan dealt a significant blow to Nebraska’s NCAA hopes, beating the Cornhuskers 77-58 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The fifth-seeded Wolverines face top-seed Michigan State on Saturday in the first semifinal at Madison Square Garden.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t said why guard J.R. Smith was suspended for last night’s game, but a person familiar with the situation says it was because Smith threw a bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones. Jones previously played for the Cavs and during Thursday’s shootaround he engaged in some trash talk with George Hill during a shooting contest. Rodney Hood started in place of Smith as the Cavs lost to Philadelphia.

UNDATED (AP) — The team receiving a kickoff would be allowed to make a fair catch inside the 25-yard line and have it result in a touchback under an NCAA Football Rules Committee proposal. The proposal addresses player safety and tactics by the kicking team that attempt to pin the receiving team close to its goal line. The proposal would go into effect next season if it is approved.

UNDATED (AP) — Detroit left-hander Travis Wood has a torn left ACL and medial meniscus in left knee. He twisted the knee while starting a rundown in the second inning of his spring training debut yesterday and fell to the ground clutching his knee. Detroit says its training staff is evaluating surgical options. The 31-year-old, who pitched in three games of the 2016 World Series for the Chicago Cubs, agreed to a minor league contract with the Tigers.
