WHY DID THE ANIMAL CROSS THE ROAD

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Why did the animal cross the road? Well, the answer will be “it didn’t” once a billion-dollar project is complete in Washington state. That project will allow animals to travel unimpeded over Washington state’s busiest interstate. The Spokesman-Review reports the construction, which is scheduled to finish in fall 2019, will connect two important habitats in the Price Creek area. Larger animals, like elk, don’t like traveling underground. The overpass is designed to give the easiest and most natural path forward.

SKYWEST-CABIN SMOKE

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Appleton International Airport says passengers on board a Delta SkyWest flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul safely got off the plane after a carry-on suitcase began smoking in the cabin. The Greenville Fire Department and the airport’s public safety staff responded to the SkyWest plane after it landed at the Appleton airport Sunday evening. The airport says the suitcase began smoking after the plane landed. All passengers left the plane using the stairs. SkyWest says the cause of the smoke has been attributed to a customer’s electronic device.

MET OPERA-KEY MIX-UP

NEW YORK (AP) — A key mix-up at the Metropolitan Opera left the tenor and conductor scrambling at one recent performance. The mix-up occurred last Friday when tenor Michael Fabiano began Rodolfo’s famous first act aria in Puccini’s “La Boheme” and the orchestra played in a different key under conductor Marco Armiliato. The Met says the tenor in the staging last fall had preferred a lower key and the orchestra’s sheet music was never restored when the run resumed last week. Fabiano kept on going, but the mix-up was noticeable enough to prompt comments online. The Met says the parts will be restored to the original key for the remaining performances.

MELEE-WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A melee broke out among fans at the state high school wrestling tournaments in Rio Rancho last weekend. The Albuquerque Journal reports two women at the center of a heated dispute disagreed on who instigated started it. One is the mother of a Belen High School wrestler. The other was the mother of a St. Pius High School wrestler. Their exchange escalated quickly and nearly blew up into a full-fledged fight in the stands. There was a good deal of yelling and shouting and pushing, and not confined to just the two women. National Guard members, there to help in handing out medals to wrestlers, climbed into the stands to defuse the situation and help escort fans away.
