NEW YORK (AP) —George Clooney and his wife Amal are donating $500,000 to students who are hoping to make the most recent school shooting in this country the last one in this country. In addition to helping fund the effort, the Clooneys are helping to organize nationwide marches against gun violence — and say they’ll also attend next month’s planned protests. In a statement, the couple says they are inspired by the “courage and eloquence” of student-activists at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed there last week.

DEADLY FIRE AT R.I. NIGHTCLUB REMEMBERED

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Today marks the 15th anniversary of the fire that raced through a nightclub in Rhode Island during a Great White rock show. The blaze killed 100 people and injured more than 200 others. The site is now a memorial park. There was to be an event marking the occasion over the weekend — but it was postponed because of a snowstorm. Today activists at the scene are calling for a new law requiring sprinklers in buildings. The blaze in 2003 at The Station started when pyrotechnics for Great White set fire to flammable foam that was installed as soundproofing.

FERGIE’S “STAR-SPANGLED BANNER”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — That “Star-Spangled Banner” controversy does yet wave. Fergie is still getting barrages of criticism online over her botched attempt to “slow jam” the national anthem. Fergie says she was trying to do something special — but now realizes it was a dud. She says she has always been honored to do the anthem — and despite the reaction she has gotten, was doing her very best.

EX-SNL STAR COLIN QUINN HAS HEART ATTACK

NEW YORK (AP) — Colin Quinn may have suffered a heart attack — but his wit is still very much intact. The former “Saturday Night Live” comedian was stricken on Valentine’s Day — and is on Twitter to talk it. He says the medical staff at the hospital in New York where he was taken was motivated to patch him up because he was “a precious jewel of comedy.” He also says he is keeping tabs on those friends who have checked in on him — and those who haven’t. Quinn is 58 — and says he is doing better.

GUESS INC. CO-FOUNDER LEAVING COMPANY OVER SEX MISCONDUCT PROBE

NEW YORK (AP) — Guess Inc. will be losing its co-founder — at least for a while. Paul Marciano says he will give up his day-to-day responsibilities at the clothing firm until a sexual misconduct investigation is completed. The complaint is filed by model and actress Kate Upton — who tells Time magazine Marciano forcibly grabbed her breasts during a Guess photo shoot nearly eight years ago. She also says he would show up at hotels where she was staying — and send her inappropriate comments. Marciano denies it.

JESSE JACKSON DEFENDS LeBRON JAMES

CHICAGO (AP) — Lay off LeBron. That’s the message civil rights activist Jesse Jackson is sending to conservative commentator Laura Ingraham — and anyone else getting on the case of NBA stars and other athletes who speak out on social issues. Ingraham said James should “just shut up and dribble” after she saw a clip of James and fellow NBA star Kevin Durant criticizing President Donald Trump’s racist remarks about immigrants from Africa and Haiti. She also mocked James for going directly to the NBA after high school, instead of attending college first.
