FERGIE – NATIONAL ANTHEM

LOS ANGELES (AP) — You may not know — or care — who won the NBA All-Star Game last night. But by now, you probably know who sang the national anthem. And in Fergie’s case, that is not a good thing. Fergie’s attempt to, shall we say, “slow jam” ”The Star Spangled Banner” made it a memorable rendition — in the same way those done by Carl Lewis and Roseanne Barr before her became famous for how NOT to do the song. By all accounts, Fergie’s slow, bluesy take of the song was spot-on as far as the singing was concerned. But the tempo and sexy delivery left many at the Staples Center and at home wondering what was going on. Golden State All-Star Draymond Green was seen with his mouth agape at the way Fergie was singing — before chuckling to himself after realizing that his reaction was being shared with the world. And hoops commentator Charles Barkley joked later on TNT that he “needed a cigarette” after hearing Fergie sing.

“BLACK PANTHER” CLAWS WAY TO TOP OF BOX OFFICE LIST

NEW YORK (AP) — So much for the concept that people won’t go to see a movie with a mostly-black cast. People showed up in droves for the weekend premiere of “Black Panther” — and the numbers indicate that it wasn’t about black or white — but green. By the time the long holiday weekend is over, it’s estimated the Ryan Coogler movie will have taken in $235 million. And the movie is generating the kind of buzz that is likely to keep it at or near the top of the box office list for weeks to come. Other movies that have shown the ability — or desire — to be inclusive have done well recently. For example, Jordan Peele’s Oscar-nominated “Get Out” has made $235 million worldwide and Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” netted $821.1 million.

“BLACK PANTHER” – GLOBAL

NEW YORK (AP) — By any measure, “Black Panther” is a huge box office hit. It ranks among the top 15 global debuts ever — and this, despite it not even being opened yet in China, Russia and Japan. “Black Panther” is also the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie that made its debut in February. With a $200 million budget, Black Panther is the most expensive movie ever made with a mostly black cast — and one of the few to be centered on a black superhero. And at its current rate of box office success, it’s expected to land Ryan Coogler at the top of the list for most money made by a movie directed by a black filmmaker.

“BLACK PANTHER” – FASHION

UNDATED (AP) — “Somebody that looks like me is a superhero — and nobody is whitewashing it.” Those were the words of one person who went to see “Black Panther” over the weekend. The comment echoes the feelings of many who went out to see the new movie over the weekend. It celebrates the Marvel superhero, one of the few black heroes featured in the fantasy genre. And, unlike movies like “12 Years a Slave” and “Selma,” it and portrays a world where black culture is seen outside the confines of slavery, racism or the struggle for civil rights. Many of those who went out to see the movie over the weekend were dressed in black — or in outfits similar to those in the fictional African empire Black Panther depicts.

BRITISH FILM AWARDS

LONDON (AP) — Even before the first acceptance speech at the BAFTA Awards was uttered, many of those attending had already made a powerful statement. More than 200 women in British entertainment signed a letter calling for an international effort to end sexual misconduct. The concept of women standing up for their rights also seeped into the awards. The big winner was “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” It stars Frances McDormand as a woman who takes on the power structure in a small town.

WEINSTEIN COMPANY FIRES PRESIDENT

BALTIMORE (AP) — The president of The Weinstein Company — like its co-founder — has found himself out of a job. The scandal-ridden studio has relieved David Glasser of his duties. The decision to cut Glasser loose comes as the New York State Attorney General concluded that Glasser knew about the kind of stuff Harvey Weinstein was up to — and chose to shield him, rather than investigate him.

GARRISON KEILLOR ACCUSER REVEALED

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The story behind Garrison Keillor’s firing from Minnesota Public Radio has a new twist to it. Turns out the person who first threw the spotlight on the former “Prairie Home Companion” host wasn’t a female accuser — but a male co-worker. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports Dan Rowles had been close to Keillor during his 16-year stint on the show. He was fired last summer — and spoke out against Keillor after he left. It was that complaint that led to the investigation that concluded Keillor had engaged in dozens of sexually inappropriate incidents over the years. The target of those incidents: a longtime female writer for the show — who didn’t even come forward to tell her account until two months after Rowles disclosed what he knew about the case.
