Dillon Maggard and Brenn Flint set school records for USU Track & Field this weekend

Utah State track & field broke two school records this weekend, as senior distance runner Dillon Maggard and junior thrower Brenn Flint continued their stellar individual seasons.

Maggard ran the 5,000-meter race at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, in order to run at a lower elevation. The decision paid off as the senior placed second in the race, just one second behind the 2017 NCAA cross country individual national champion, in a school-record time of 13:40.59. In his heat, Maggard finished ahead of nine additional 2017 cross country All-Americans.

Not only is the time a school record, it is the second-fastest time in Mountain West history. Additionally, Maggard broke the school record by nearly 24 seconds, and is the only Aggie ever to run that distance in under 14 minutes.

After his performance this weekend, Maggard now owns the indoor track & field school records in the mile (4:01.25), 3,000m (7:52.99) and 5,000m, showing his versatility.

Meanwhile, in Albuquerque, N.M., Flint set the school’s shot put bench mark for the fourth time this season, as she recorded a throw of 16.53m (54-2.75).

Flint is the only woman Aggie ever to eclipse the 16m mark in the indoor shot put, and she has done it three times this season.

Joining Maggard at the Iowa State Classic, senior sprinter Clay Lambourne ran a 1:48.44 in the 800m race to take sixth. His time is a personal best, and is second all-time in school history only behind former Olympian and NCAA national champion Mark Enyeart.

Senior Tylee Newman-Skinner and junior Cierra Simmons placed 16th and 17th in the mile with times of 4:50.15 and 4:50.64, respectively, both of which are top-five marks all-time at USU.

Back at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, Utah State’s women’s 4x400m relay team recorded the seventh-fastest time in USU history, as the team of sophomore Melanie Sullivan, senior Breann Bate, freshman Jordan Brandt and freshman Kasia Lawrynowicz crossed the line in 3:44.34 to take sixth.

On the men’s side, freshman distance runner Stokton Smith placed first in the 3,000m race with a personal-best time of 8:29.93, while sophomore Luke Beattie and junior Kody Gould also set PRs by finishing in 8:34.77 and 8:38.69 to take fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the shot put, senior David Hirschmann recorded a new PR with a toss of 17.62m (57-9.75) to take fourth place.

Lastly, at the Saturday-only Bronco Challenge in Nampa, Idaho, senior Kelsey Yamauchi-Richins claimed the 5,000m title with a personal-best time of 17:12.93, just ahead of fellow senior Jackie Heaps, who placed second with a time of 18:24.80.

Freshman Whitney Skabelund won the long jump in her first attempt at the event this season with a mark of 5.49m (18-0.25), before setting a new personal best in the triple jump with a distance of (36-10.25) to take fourth. Freshman Bailey Maseda was USU’s top finisher in the triple jump, traveling a personal-best 11.34m (37-2.50).

On the men’s side, junior James Withers claimed the 5,000m crown with a time of 14:37.22.

In the field, junior Leaugen Fray won the long jump with a distance of 7.31m (23-11.75), while junior pole vaulter Sam Nelson cleared a height of 5.00m (16-4.75) to tie his PR and win the event.

The Aggies are back in action at the 2018 Mountain West Indoor Championships held Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 22-24, in Albuquerque, N.M.
